Wreck Dive Trip - Advanced Scuba Diver Trip
Come with us and enjoy the Blackthorn Dive wreck trip on Tampa Bay Coast.
The coastguard cutter Blackthorn was built in Duluth Minnesota in May 1943. She had a length of 180 feet and a beam of 37 foot.
She carried out her duties well until a fatal collision in Tampa Bay took place with a tanker called S.S. Capricorn (pictured) when 23 of her crew were killed.
The collision took place in early January 1980 and the damage was so great she sunk with many of the crew losing their lives. She had to be removed from Tampa's busy shipping lanes so she was raised and towed to Pinellas Artificial Reef #2 and sunk in the same month.
She now rests on the sandy bottom at s depth of 80 feet and is broken into at least two pieces. Scuba divers are advised not to penetrate the wreck but she has already attracted some fabulous marine life and it is not unusual to be met by a blanket of baitfish as you arrive at the wreck.
Not far from this wreck lies another wreck, the Sheridan, a tugboat that is located no more than 100 meters to the southeast.
